 The Benefits Of Communications

Being a communications major is more than just working at a radio station, now being a part of communications is being a part of something bigger holding a now important role as there are new ways of broadcasting coming up; some jobs aren’t even known, but do exist such as SportLink and some jobs which are popular such as being on the News casting weather or events, at High Point University we have a studio set up as a News station were students get hands on experience called HPU Visions. These are jobs that students can do on campus, which help them get real world experience in the profession they want to go into. With this being student led they will work with comfortable student schedules, apart from making sure students prioritize school first to ensure the student does not fail their classes.

SportsLink is the primary club that is responsible for broadcasting all D1 athletic events through ESPN+ and we are able to train you with all of our peer mentors, along with our academic advisors. They also offer positions in front of or behind the camera; it is also a place for you to form connections with professionals in their field.

For those looking to work in a news setting HPU Visions would be the best offer. This program provides students with a first hand experience of what news stations do throughout the day. They also offer students positions in front of or behind the camera.

We also have classes for the students, such as an applied social media and podcasting workshop. The podcasting workshop is a class that the students take to help them with podcasting development and learning how to run a podcast. This can help them make their own show or help develop skills to be on live TV. The applied social media class is a class where you take what you have learned from previous social media or communication classes and put it into action in a non-profit organization; this helps the student with hands-on experience, and these classes together can be good resume builders.

In conclusion, being a communications major, you have access to the two biggest clubs here on campus with the ability to make connections with people and work for big companies, but even if you decide to not take those opportunities, you have classes such as a podcasting workshop and applied social media to help give you real world experience and connections with people.

Before you go, here are three questions to ask yourself or spark discussion in the comments below.
    1. Have you wanted your College to be more engaged with your major?
    2. Are you currently struggling to find a major?
    3. What field do you study and what do you do?
